The French / German culture broadcaster Arte is one of the most active European broadcasters investing in creative documentaries. Arte produces and commissions documentary films directed by filmmakers from all over the world: both beginners as well established directors. This master class is dedicated to documentary professionals and will focus on co-production possibilities for independent producers. Panelists are Emilie Kleinman (ARTE France) and Hans Robert Eisenhauer (Ventana Films, Germany, former Deputy Programme Director and Head of Theme Evenings for ARTE).
In partnership with the Movies that Matter Foundation, we present one of the most controversial award-winning documentaries of the year: “The Act of Killing”, directed by Joshua Oppenheimer. Sadistic criminals killed more than a million alleged Communists. These murders went unpunished and the perpetrators are still powerful, influential people who can rely on the support of corrupt politicians. These men proudly recall their struggle against the Communists and demonstrate their efficient methods of slaughter. Anwar Congo and Herman Koto are delighted when the film’s director asks them to re-enact these murders for their documentary. They zealously set about finding actors, designing elaborate costumes and discussing possible scenarios for a powerful film.
The documentary “PUSSY vs. PUTIN” deals with the famous Russian punk rock protest band PUSSY Riot. Filmmakers TaisiyaKrugovihk and VaislyBogatov follow the feministpunk rockprotest group from their first unauthorized guerrillaperformances in unusual public locations like bus stops till their famous protest action in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior. On March 3, 2012, two of the group members, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina, were arrested and charged with hooliganism. A third member, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was arrested on March 16. The filmmakers capture all events on camera and are evenpresent at the trial, when three members of “PUSSY Riot” were convicted of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred”, and each was sentenced to two years imprisonment.
