Jesser lives in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua, where sugarcanes are produced. The wooden houses and huts in this area are in poor condition. Fields of sugarcane cover up the area. “Look! We are living in the prison of sugarcanes! I’m going to plan a great escape!“, he jokes. But despite of his age, he is fully aware of the hopeless situation he and his family are in. Jesser’s father is sick and suffers from severe kidney failure, like many other men in the village who cut sugarcanes. Unfortunately, here is no other work. Jesser is very scared that he might lose his father and knows that it can happen if he goes to work in the fields again. At the same time, he also understands that without his father working, his family won’t be able to afford food. He, as the eldest son, will probably have to do the same work as his father in the future. Jesser wants to change his faith and is trying his best to plan another future for himself. Will he ever succeed?
