My parents grew up in the East and West when there were still two Germanys. My mum grew up with giant sweets, Pinocchio and adventurous train trips through Europe. My dad loved Grabower chocolate-covered marshmallows, Burratino and summer camps of the Pioneer youth organisation. Giant sweets and chocolate-covered marshmallows tells a tale of two childhoods in the GDR and FRG in the 1970s and 1980s, of the little differences between sweets, cars and fairytale characters. It is about an autobiographical family history, depicted from the microperspective of the couple’s son. The characters are not invented and any resemblances to real people are intentional.
